Onyx are unique, American made hubs that have one compelling feature that has two aspects. First is the sprag clutch, which has instant and very positive engagement. The sub-feature of the sprag clutch is that the hubs are silent when you coast. Not quiet – silent. Though these might not seem like a huge deal on their face, they’ve made hard converts out of many people.

”Onyx hubs are very expensive. A set of Onyx hubs costs in the neighbourhood of a decent suspension fork, or a mass-produced steel frame. But, hubs – especially rear hubs – are one of the most important components on a bicycle, and also one of the most commonly under-specced and overlooked components on complete bikes. Freehub failures are trip-ending, pushing the bike sort of failures, and occur with surprising regularity on so called ‘mid-range’ hubs. Not only should it be nearly impossible for Onyx’s sprag-clutch freehub to fail, but the instant engagement offers a very noticeable performance-boost on technical trails.”

Onyxin navat ovat tunnettu vapaakytkimeen perustuvasta välittömästä kytkennästään. Muita mekanismin hyötyjä ovat erittäin alhainen kitka – katso mittaustulokset tältä sivulta – ja täysi äänettömyys. Mekanismin toimintaperiaate avautuu parhaiten alla olevasta videosta.
Bejnamin Land ja Bikepacking.com mainitsevat kytkennän pehmeyden, joka johtuu vapaakytkinmekanismin toimintaperiatteesta. ”Spragien” tai ns. kiilapalojen pystyyn nouseminen ja kiilautuminen navan rungon ja vapaarattaan väliin ei ole luonteeltan I/0-tyylinen tapahtuma samalla tavoin kuin perinteisessä kynsi- tai ratchet-mekanismissa. Kytkennän erilainen tuntuma johtuu juurikin tästä seikasta.
